Understanding The Moon Phases

Have you ever wondered what causes the moon phases? We all know that its appearance changes over time. But why? The good way to understand the phases of the moon is to examine an earth-moon-sun diagram.

I've always been a big believer in proof. When there's so much hype and crap on the Internet these days, you can never get enough proof... Because results are results, period. That's what really counts, no matter what. Right?

In this exercise, you will investigate the cause of the phases of the Moon. The figure below shows an orbital diagram of the Earth-Moon system as viewed from above the Earth's North Pole. Light from the Sun is coming from the left. Note that the drawing is not to scale.

Section I Shade in the part of the Moon that is in shadow and the part that is unobservable from Earth in each of the eight numbered positions. The first has been completed as an example. (Use dark shading for the shadow, light cross-hatch for the unobservable side.)

Section II Record the phase and appearance of the Moon in Table 1 for each of the eight positions in the diagram. Phases are called crescent if less than half of the visible surface of the moon is illuminated. If exactly half of the visible surface of the moon is illuminated, that is a quarter moon (either first or third quarter). Phases are called gibbous if more than half of the visible surface is illuminated. If the entire surface is illuminated that is a full moon. New moon is the opposite of full moon, where none of the visible surface of the moon is illuminated by the sun. Crescent and gibbous moons are called either waxing (increasing lit area), or waning (decreasing lit area). Also determine the Moon's elongation (0-360 degrees). Elongation is defined as the angle between the sun, earth, and object of interest (moon), with the earth at the vertex. Note that if you know the Moon's elongation, you know its phase, and vice versa.

Now pretend that the tennis ball is the Moon.

The Scale Model of the Earth-Moon System: We selected your head and a tennis ball because: R_Earth = 6.4 x 10³ km and the R_Moon = 1.7 x 10³km and this ratio, 3.8:1, is about the same as the ratio of the radius of your head to a tennis ball. To scale the distance between the Earth and the Moon in units of the Moon's radius, divide the distance between the two, 3.84 x 10⁵ km, by the radius of the Moon. This = 226. So, if the radius of the tennis ball is 1.4 inches, about how far away should you hold the tennis ball for it to be to scale? Multiplying 1.4 in times 226 is about 316 inches or 26 ft.

2. Place the Earth (your head) and the Moon (tennis ball) in the proper relative positions to the Sun so that the Moon's phase is full. (you don't have to go 26ft. Away)
(a) Sketch the relative positions of the Earth, Moon and the Sun. Show with an arrow the direction in which the Earth is spinning and the Moon orbiting. The Moon orbits the Earth in the same direction that the Earth spins. If the top of your head is the North pole, they orbit and spin to the left (counter-clockwise).

(b) What time is it for you when the Full Moon is highest in the sky (that is, you are looking straight at it)?

Now have your partner hold the tennis ball representing the Moon in the same place and turn yourself to the left until the ball is just about to disappear from view, that is the Moon is about to set. Where is the light representing the Sun?

4. An eclipse of the Moon occurs when the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon. Again use your head and the tennis ball to represent the Earth and the Moon respectively and orient them so the shadow of your head (the Earth) falls on the tennis ball (the Moon).

For practical purposes, phases of the Moon and the percent of the Moon illuminated are independent of the location on the Earth from where the Moon is observed. That is, all the phases occur at the same time regardless of the observer's position.

New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter phases are considered to be primary phases and their dates and times are published in almanacs and on calendars. The two crescent and two gibbous phases are intermediate phases, each of which lasts for about a week between the primary phases, during which time the exact fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated gradually changes.

New Moon - The Moon's unilluminated side is facing the Earth. The Moon is not visible (except during a solar eclipse).The lighted side of the Moon faces away from the Earth. This means that the Sun, Earth, and Moon are almost in a straight line, with the Moon in between the Sun and the Earth. The Moon that we see looks very dark.

Waxing Crescent - The Moon appears to be partly but less than one-half illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is increasing. This Moon can be seen after the New Moon, but before the First Quarter Moon. The crescent will grow larger and larger every day, until the Moon looks like the First Quarter Moon.

First Quarter - One-half of the Moon appears to be illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is increasing. The right half of the Moon appears lighted and the left side of the Moon appears dark. During the time between the New Moon and the First Quarter Moon, the part of the Moon that appears lighted gets larger and larger every day, and will continue to grow until the Full Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - The Moon appears to be more than one-half but not fully illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is increasing. This Moon can be seen after the First Quarter Moon, but before the Full Moon. The amount of the Moon that we can see will grow larger and larger every day. ("Waxing" means increasing, or growing larger.)

Full Moon - The Moon's illuminated side is facing the Earth. The Moon appears to be completely illuminated by direct sunlight. The lighted side of the Moon faces the Earth. This means that the Earth, Sun, and Moon are nearly in a straight line, with the Earth in the middle. The Moon that we see is very bright from the sunlight reflecting off it.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon appears to be more than one-half but not fully illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is decreasing. This Moon can be seen after the Full Moon, but before the Last Quarter Moon. The amount of the Moon that we can see will grow smaller and smaller every day. ("Waning" means decreasing, or growing smaller.)

Last Quarter - One-half of the Moon appears to be illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is decreasing. Sometimes called Third Quarter. The left half of the Moon appears lighted, and the right side of the Moon appears dark. During the time between the Full Moon and the Last Quarter Moon, the part of the Moon that appears lighted gets smaller and smaller every day. It will continue to shrink until the New Moon.

Waning Crescent - The Moon appears to be partly but less than one-half illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is decreasing. This Moon can be seen after the Last Quarter Moon and before the New Moon. The crescent will grow smaller and smaller every day, until the Moon looks like the New Moon.

The table gives a summary of approximately when the Moon is visible and where to look (the crescent and gibbous phases are in between the table values). There are times during the moon's monthly cycle that the Moon is sometimes visible in broad daylight!

Moon Phase Comparison
The moon's cycle is a continuous process that is in constant change. The moon never stays at any one phase for more than an instance in time. Starting with a new moon on day one and ending with a waning crescent moon on day 29, the moon's light shape and intensity in always changing.

These phases of the Moon, in the sequence of their occurrence (starting from New Moon) is listed to the left.

As noted the moon reaches a major phase every seven days after the new moon. The first of which is the first quarter moon occuring after 7.4 days. Between the new and first quarter is the time of the waxing crescent moon. 14.8 days into trip around the earth we see a full moon, but not before the waxing gibbous make an appearance. After the full moon a state of waning begins on the 15th day. Along with a last quarter moon both a waning gibbous and crescent moon is visible before a new moon cycle starts a new on the 29th day.

Moon Phase Misconception..

"The most common incorrect reason given for the cause of the Moon's phases is that we are seeing the shadow of the Earth on the Moon! But this cannot be correct: when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth, we get a lunar eclipse. Anyone who has seen a lunar eclipse, though, might remember that the Moon actually passes through the Earth's shadow only rarely, so that can't be why the Moon has phases. The real reason for the Moon's phases depends on two things: the Moon is round, and the angle it makes with the Earth and Sun changes over its orbit.

As the moon circles the Earth, the shape of the moon appears to change; this is because different amounts of the illuminated part of the moon are facing us. The shape varies from a full moon (when the Earth is between the sun and the moon) to a new moon (when the moon is between the sun and the Earth).

My goal with these pages is to show a photo of the moon for each night of a lunation. A lunation is the cycle of the moon's phases. From new moon to the next new moon is about 29 1/2 days or one lunation, also known as a synodic month. Each night as the terminator moves across the face of the moon, different lunar features become visible. This might take a long time to get all the photos, for several reasons. Often it's too cloudy to photograph the moon. Very young and very old moons are quite a challenge to find. Sometimes the moon doesn't rise until well past midnight and I might be fast asleep when the moon is visible. So eventually, I hope to get about 29 1/2 photos of the moon. Wish me luck. At the rate I'm going it might take a while.
